Japan’s clothing imports grow 8.6% in March’14

The imports of clothing and accessories by Japan grew by 8.6 percent year-on-year to 265.146 billion yen (approx US$ 2.6 billion) in March 2014, as per the provisional trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance. The value of import is based upon the CIF value, and the entry is made in the month within which falls the date of the import permit, the press release said.
The Asian countries accounted for 246.827 billion yen of Japanese apparel and clothing accessories imports during the month, with China alone contributing 186.062 billion. However, Japanese garment and accessories import from China increased at a lower rate of 4.8 percent year-on-year, compared to the 8.6 percent overall growth in imports.
Japan’s clothing and accessories imports from the Asean region increased sharply by 22.1 percent year-on-year to 47.904 billion during the month under review.
During the month, Japan imported garments and accessories worth 12.439 billion from the EU, showing an increase of 15.1 percent year-on-year. The country also imported 2.143 billion yen worth of apparel and accessories from the US, up 0.6 percent year-on-year, from the US.
In March 2014, Japan also imported textile yarn and fabrics valued at 77.208 billion yen, registering a jump of 20.5 percent year-on-year.
In 2013, Japan’s clothing and accessories imports surged by 21.1 percent year-on-year to 3.247 trillion yen, while its textile yarn and fabric imports shot up by 19 percent year-on-year to 849.785 billion yen.
